(See article above.) “KIDICAL MASS” FAMILY FUN BIKE RIDES COME TO ARCATA! By Oona Smith Why “Kidical Mass?” Kidical Mass Rides are informal, fun, safe, easy-going, and law-abiding family bike rides for kids of all ages. “M” explains further, “We ride at a family pace. We aim for safety and visibility. We think the more people who see happy families out biking, the more people will make family cycling part of their routine, and the safer we’ll all be. ‘“Wheelly”’ though, our primary goal is bicycling fun.” When? Saturday, September 11, 2010, 10:15 a.m. ! Families in cities nationwide (Eugene, Seattle, Salem, San Luis Obispo, Chicago, Albany) already ride in organized Kidical Masses. Join us as Arcatans pedal into this happy, peaceable fray with our first ride on Saturday, September 11, 2010, starting at 10:15 a.m. How far can you spit it? September’s Kidical Mass will be a short, flat ride through the Arcata Bottoms. We’ll meet at 10:15 a.m. at the bike rack at 9th & L Street (across from the Old Creamery Building). The ride will include a stop at the Windsong Village Park for free watermelon and a watermelon spittin’ contest! We’ll end the ride back at the Old Creamery Building. MO’ Riding...Let’s do it! Kidical Mass Family Fun Bike Rides are FREE and open to ALL. Brain Buckets required by law for those under 18 and by common sense for anyone else. Kidical Mass rides are informal gatherings. All riders look out for each other, but ultimately individual riders are responsible for deciding what is safe and appropriate for themselves and their family. For more information, call MO’ Riding at 825-6620 or 362-1131. OCTOBER IS INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH……. but we say Walk & Roll.” No need to leave your bike at home. Join over 40 nations worldwide celebrating International Walk to School, and enjoying the benefits of walking, bicycling, and skating to school. Walk to School Day is celebrated on October 6th. NEW BIKE LANES BEING STRIPED ON HARRIS STREET EAST OF HARRISON AVENUE According to Chris Whitworth, Deputy Public Works Director, the Humboldt County repaving project on Harris Street between Harrison Avenue and Redwood Acres will look a little different when completed. Parking has been eliminated on the north side, leaving enough room to stripe a bike lane on each side. This will be a nice improvement for cyclists. BIKE LANE STRIPING TO BE REFRESHED ON SOME EUREKA STREETS Assistant City Manager, Mike Knight, says he agrees that the bike lane striping is in a deplorable state at this time. He said that the City’s striping machine is out of commission, but that they are contracting for some striping in the month of September. New striping will be done on Harris, Henderson and J Streets. That will be a good start. Hopefully, the others will get attention next year at the latest. RUMBLE STRIPS ADDED TO LOCAL FREEWAYS Rumble strips were added to local freeways in July, which will make them safer for cyclists. They were added between Eureka and Arcata on Route 101; and to Route 299 between Route 101 and the truck scales east of Blue Lake. ARCATA POLICE DEPARTMENT PARTNERS WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES TO REWARD HELMET-WEARING YOUTH During the month of July, the Arcata Police Department, in partnership with local businesses, rewarded local children seen wearing helmets when riding their bicycles and skateboards. Gift certificates were given out by officers on patrol. A total of 15 businesses participated. HBBCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
