Completion of the “Final Four” of the Humboldt Bay Trail Celebrated on June 28th
On Saturday afternoon a major celebration happened at the Adorni Center in Eureka with the completion of the final 4.2 miles of the Humboldt Bay Trail, linking the City of Eureka with Arcata. Nearly 20 organizations had tables with information and wares at the Adorni, including the HBBCA. Speeches included Senator McGuire, Natalie Arroyo, Elaine Hogan and Hank Seemann. Hank has headed up the effort for the County over the last several years, leading to design, environmental clearance, permits and construction. While the contractor opened the trail for use that day, there were still a few items to complete, including centerline striping. Several hundred cyclists, walkers, and roller skaters rode the trail that day and have continued to enjoy the trail immensely ever since. Cyclists can now ride about a 24 mile round trip of continuous off road trail from the parking lot below Humboldt Hill to Arcata. Kudos to Colin Fiske, Director for the Coalition for Responsible Transportation Priorities (CRTP) for taking the lead to plan (along with many others) the trail celebration and to provide opportunities for maximum participation by the public all day on the trail.
If you want to enjoy the trail without so many people, weekdays are the answer. Weekends are seeing more cyclists on other adjacent sections of trail, too.
Next up will be a proposed extension of the Humboldt Bay Trail southerly to College of the Redwoods, another 4.1 miles. By late 2025, Humboldt County, together with its partners, community, and tribal input, will complete a planning study for the project.
Caltrans’ Indianola Interchange Project to Connect to the Humboldt Bay Trail
The Caltrans interchange at Indianola Road will connect directly to the Humboldt Bay Trail. There will be bike lanes on Indianola within the Caltrans right of way. Included in the project will be the closure of all Route 101 at-grade crossings except at Airport Road in Eureka. It will have a northbound traffic signal to allow safe crossings of the highway for southbound traffic. Other at-grade intersections will provide for right turns only. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Bike Month Humboldt Culminated with a Bike Celebration at the Jefferson Center in Eureka
The Bike Month Humboldt Coalition sponsored a Bike Celebration at the Jefferson Center in Eureka on May 31st, from 11am to 2 pm. The various coalition members staffed tables. There was bicycle powered music, a skills course for kids, a bicycle-powered smoothie machine, and free bicycle mini tune-ups by Adventure’s Edge. The HBBCA, County Public Health and the Humboldt County Association of Governments provided free helmets for kids, and Rick Knapp and PatriciaAnne WinterSun individually fitted the helmets and showed parents how to keep them fitting properly.
Brett Gronemeyer was kept busy at the microphone giving away prizes donated by local businesses, including generous gift cards by Adventure’s Edge, the HBBCA and North Coast Co-Op. A special shout out to the Co-Op who provided free drawings all month at its stores and also provided goodies at the Celebration.
The HBBCA, using generous donations by members, purchased 30 helmets. The HBBCA was partially reimbursed $270 as a result of donations from local businesses for helmet purchases. These donations were collected as a result of solicitations by Bruce Maxwell, Coalition and HBBCA member and organizer of the new organization, Humboldt Bicyclists Club. Thanks Bruce!
Who to Call When You See a Safety Concern (Rev. 9/27//24)
The HBBCA periodically checks with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine appropriate contact personnel to respond to bike-related issues. If you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve safety or convenience for cyclists such as a pothole in a bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, the need to clear vegetation encroaching on a shoulder, or a street light that is out, call the responsible agency/person listed below. Of course, if you see a condition that requires immediate attention, like a stop sign knocked down, call 9-1-1. For non-emergency conditions, the following contact information is provided:
