Next Meeting at Carmela’s Mexican Restaurant on Monday, April 28th in Eureka

The next meeting of the HBBCA will be on Monday, April 28th. The dinner meeting will
be at Chapala’s Mexican Restaurant, 2nd and C
Streets in Eureka from 6-8 pm. The agenda will be set by the attendees. One agenda item will be Bike Month Humboldt 2025. See article below.

Bike Month Humboldt 2025 is in May

Many events will occur in May. Sign up for the Bike Challenge, attend events throughout the month sponsored by the Bike Month Humboldt Coalition. Go to the BikeMonthHumboldt.org website for a calendar of events (still under construction). On Saturday, May 31st at the culmination of Bike Month, many agencies and interest groups will be present, including the HBBCA, at the Bicycle Celebration. Again the event will be at the Jefferson Community Center outdoor park at 1000 A Street in Eureka. This year, the coalition will offer free fitted helmets for kids, 6-14. Kids must be present. The HBBCA is providing helmets using funds donated by our generous members. Humboldt Public Health and the Humboldt County Association of Governments will also participate in the helmet giveaway. There will be a course set up for young kids to ride. So bring a bike if you want them to participate. The event will be from 11 am to 2 pm.

There will be Bicycle-Powered Music, prizes given by the HBBCA, Adventures Edge, the Co-Op and other businesses not known at the publishing of this newsletter. Adventure’s Edge will again provide mini-tuneups for bikes at the Celebration. There will be a group ride from Arcata to the Celebration. The Coalition for Responsible Transportation Priorites (CRTP) will provide valet parking for bikes. Check the calendar for details. For other events, like mural rides, pancake breakfast rides, etc., go to the BikeMonthHumboldt.org website. Details are presently in the works.

Humboldt Bay Trail Celebration on June 28th

To celebrate completion of the Humboldt Bay Trail “Final Four,” join the many hard working advocates and supporters at the Adorni Center in Eureka on Saturday, June 28th. The event is spearheaded by Colin Fiske, Executive Director of the Coalition for Responsible Transportation Priorities. Specific will be found in the media as the date approaches. It is not yet known whether the trail will be completed at that time. It is tentatively expected to be completed in June or July. But, if it doesn’t stop raining by then??? The contractor has been able to continue with placement of base material and other work not requiring earthwork even during these rainy months. It will be an exciting day when those biking between Eureka and Arcata will have another option. And for others, just adding 4 more miles of paved trail/bike path will be a wonderful opportunity for non-motorized activities, walking, bird watching, dog walking, and more.

Bay to Zoo Trail Moving Forward in Eureka

The Times-Standard had an extensive article in its March 9th edition on the status of the Bay to Zoo Trail in Eureka. The following are excerpts from that article.

The trail will run north-south along the sloughs and gulches that pass through the eastern part of Eureka, linking the existing Waterfront Trail to the Sequoia Park Zoo. According to the City’s Project Manager, Brittany Powell, “Right now we’re at a pretty exciting point in the project. Leading up to this point, a lot of it has been behind the scenes—environmental impact studies, working with our consultants GHD and Caltrans who is funding the project. The City is now at the “30% design” milestone. At the present time, the City is pursuing State funding for the next stage which includes design engineering and right of way acquisition. “We’re going to be a lot more in the public process. Residents in the area are going to be hearing from us,” according to Powell.

Final design is expected to occur in 2025-26. Construction could occur in 2026 or 2027 depending on funding and progress. For more information, go to the website: eurekaca.gov/255/Trails.

Who to Call When You See a Safety Concern (Rev. 9/27//24)

The HBBCA periodically checks with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine appropriate contact personnel to respond to bike-related issues.  If you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve safety or convenience for cyclists such as a pothole in a bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, the need to clear vegetation encroaching on a shoulder, or a street light that is out, call the responsible agency/person listed below.  Of course, if you see a condition that requires immediate attention, like a stop sign knocked down, call 9-1-1.  For non-emergency conditions, the following contact information is provided:
