THANKS FOR THE GENEROSITY OF HBBCA MEMBERS
Thanks again to the many members of the HBBCA who have generously donated in addition to their dues in support of the goal and objectives of the HBBCA.   This generosity has allowed the HBBCA to maintain its dues at $5.00 per year for the 25 years of its existence despite the increasing cost of doing business.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING MAY 12th IN EUREKA
The next regular HBBCA meeting will be held at Chapala’s Mexican Restaurant at 2nd and C Streets in Eureka on Monday, May 12th. Those interested in joining us for dinner can order at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will begin at 6:30. The meeting is open to the public.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. For more information, check the HBBCA website at www.humbike.org.

DON’T MISS BIKE TO WORK RALLIES IN EUREKA AND ARCATA
A reminder: Bike to Work rallies will be held at noontime on May 16th at the Eureka Gazebo, foot of F Street. On May 23rd, there will be a similar rally at the Arcata Plaza.  Check out the details and all the sponsors atwww.humboldtbikemonth.com.

Thanks to Lindsay Walker for developing the website. Check out all the sponsors of this year’s bike month activities on the website.

By now, everyone should be aware of the rallies, especially with the great promotional efforts sponsored by the Co-Op. We are very thankful for their efforts to help our rallies be the best ever. They are also sponsoring “energy stops” at both stores on the days of the events. Stop by the Eureka store in the morning of the 16th, between 6:30 and 8:30 am for some food and drink if you are riding a bike and sporting a helmet. Same time at the Arcata store on the 23rd. And, don’t miss the free drawing for bikes at each store in celebration of Bike to Work Month.

At the rallies, there will be lots of prizes and contests (e.g., best commuter bike, longest commute, and fastest at changing a flat). The HBBCA will be offering many prizes (e.g., T-shirts, lights); including $50 in cash for the lucky one who’s free ticket is drawn. Lots of prizes have been donated by local bike shops. Be there—bring a trailer to haul your winnings.

LOCAL AGENCIES ADOPTING BIKE MONTH PROCLAMATIONS
At the request of the Bike to Work Coalition, the Board of Supervisors will adopt a proclamation on May 13th at 9 am, declaring it Bike Month in Humboldt County.   Other proclamations have or will be made by McKinleyville Services District, and the cities of Eureka, Arcata and Trinidad.

SEVENTH STREET BIKE LANE FINISHED IN EUREKA
Last month, the City finished the bike lane on 7th Street between J Street and Myrtle Avenue. In consultation with the HBBCA, they also added a bike lane next to the island for left-turning cyclists. They are also working with the HBBCA to provide for a crossing of Myrtle at 6th Street. While motorists will not be able to cross Myrtle at 6th, bicyclists will when the median island is completed.

ARCATA SELECTED AS BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY BY THE LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS
Just as this Wheel People is going to print, we have been advised that the City of Arcata has been selected as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The League selects and reconfirms cities each year if certain criteria are met. Some cities are selected at the Gold level, others Silver, and lastly Bronze. The City of Arcata was selected in the Bronze category, but it is a big start. Now, each year the City can work to raise its level. And, other cities in the region can try to join Arcata.

For the first time this year, the League selected one city in the Platinum category, that being the City of Davis CA. Davis has bike lanes on 95% of its arterial and collector streets. It has 27 grade separations just for bikes and pedestrians.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF “SHARROWS?”
Those of you in Arcata have noticed that several streets with inadequate width to sport a bike lane now have pavement markings intended to suggest that bikes and motorists are supposed to share the lane. Without supporting signs, however, many bicyclists and motorists are confused, as the pavement marking just shows a bike with some arrows in the lane. Let Doby Class, Director of Public Works at the City, know your opinions.

SPEAKING OF ROADS……
The HBBCA has been trying to get the City of Eureka to increase sweeping of bike lanes in the City. For some unknown reason, streets in the outlying areas seem to get swept, but the same glass that was in the bike lanes (all of them!) in January is still there.   Please take time to report your concerns to those listed above. It may be that they think there is only one of us noticing that the streets are being ignored.

CHILDREN COMMUTE, TOO!
The Humboldt Partnership for Active Living (HumPAL) will be hosting a Safe Routes to School Summit during the first week of June. If you'd like to learn about walking, school buses, safety training, encouragement programs and more call Melanie Williams @269-2055 for summit details.

WHO TO CALL WHEN YOU SEE A SAFETY CONCERN (Revised 3/08)
The HBBCA checked with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine whom to contact if you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve safety or convenience for cyclists. This might include a pothole in the bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, or the need to clear vegetation encroaching on the shoulder.

Of course, if you see a condition that requires immediate emergency action,
call 9-1-1. For other conditions, the following is provided:
