THANKS FOR THE GENEROSITY OF HBBCA MEMBERS
Thanks again to the many members of the HBBCA who have generously donated in addition to their dues in support of the goal and objectives of the HBBCA.   This generosity has allowed the HBBCA to maintain its dues at $5.00 per year for the 25 years of its existence despite the increasing cost of doing business.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING MARCH 24th IN ARCATA
The next regular HBBCA meeting will be held at Luzmila’s/Carmela’s Mexican Restaurant at 13th and G Streets in Arcata on Monday, March 24th.  Those interested in joining us for dinner can order at 6:00 p.m.  The meeting will begin at 6:30.  The meeting is open to the public.

PRODUCTIVE MEETING WITH EUREKA POLICE CHIEF
On February 14, Vice-President, Rick Knapp, had a very productive meeting with the Eureka Chief of Police, Garr Nielsen to offer ideas for enforcement and for means to achieve traffic calming in the City so that the need for enforcement is lessened.   Rick found the Chief to be very receptive to ideas and promised to carry forward as he participates in the City’s new Traffic Safety Commission.   Some of the ideas discussed:

  • Conversion of H and I Streets to two lane one way streets with bike lanes to reduce speeds and accidents, improve safety for pedestrians and bikes, and improve livability for the residential areas.
  • Add signs warning  “red light runners” of $270 fines to reduce the high number of violations and improve safety.
  • Add radar speed detectors at strategic locations (similar to Eureka-Arcata corridor) to reduce speeds and improve safety.

At the end of the meeting, the Chief indicated he would like to consult with Rick on issue areas in the future.

PLEASE RENEW YOUR DUES FOR 2008
Please renew your dues for 2008.   All memberships expire December 31, 2007 unless extensions have already been paid.   See form at the end of the newsletter.

FILM FESTIVAL A SUCCESS
The Bigfoot Bicycle Club organized a Bike Film Double Feature on February 28that HSU.  Proceeds from the raffle will benefit HBBCA’s Bike to Work activities.  The first film, We Are Traffic, is a documentary about the evolution of the Critical Mass bike rides in San Francisco.  The second film, Klunkerz, showed the beginnings of the mountain biking in Marin County.  Both films were entertaining and well attended.  Thanks to Tim Daniels for organizing the festival.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP WITH TOUR OF THE UNKNOWN COAST (TUC)
HBBCA will help with the TUC on Saturday, May 10, 2008 in an effort to raise money for our various educational and advocacy activities.  We need a couple of drivers to provide sag wagon support for the event.  Tim Daniels has volunteered so far.   We need one more volunteer to drive a van, furnished by the TUC, to pick up stranded riders.

2008 BIKE TO WORK ACTIVITIES (corrected 4/2/08)
In partnership with several other organizations and individuals, HBBCA is working to make the 2008 Bike-To-Work Month activities better than ever.  Two big events are planned: on Friday, May 16th in Eureka; and on Friday, May 23rd in Arcata (corrected dates).  We're still working out the details, and volunteers are needed to help organize, publicize, and staff both events.

HBBCA would also like to have proclamations adopted by each of the local cities and county in support of Bike-to-Work Month.  The more help we get, the more we can do.  This is your chance to help show that bikes have a significant place in our transportation system.  Please call Scott Kelly, 839-3614 for more information or with offers of help.

WHO TO CALL WHEN YOU SEE A SAFETY CONCERN (Revised 3/08)
The HBBCA checked with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine whom to contact if you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve safety or convenience for cyclists. This might include a pothole in the bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, or the need to clear vegetation encroaching on the shoulder.

Of course, if you see a condition that requires immediate emergency action,
call 9-1-1. For other conditions, the following is provided:
