SAFE PASSING LAWS ENACTED IN OTHER STATES
According to the League of American Bicyclists, Florida recently passed legislation (HB 7079) saying that “the driver of a vehicle overtaking a bicycle or other non-motorized vehicle must pass the bicycle or other non-motorized vehicle at a safe distance of not less than three feet between the vehicle and the bicycle or other non-motorized vehicle.” Arizona, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wisconsin also have similar laws on their books. To date, no such law exists in California.

HOW TO GET 633 MILES PER GALLON
In the November edition of Bicycling, there is an article about a 24-year old Connecticut cyclist embarked on a mission to see how many miles he could ride on “a gallon of gasoline.” It turns out he was able to ride 633 miles on 31,000 calories, the amount of energy contained in one gallon of gasoline. The average vehicle would burn about 30 gallons of gas to go that far. The cyclist burned five ham and cheese sandwiches, a steak burrito, a quesadilla, chips and salsa, and a variety of drinks. It was probably cheaper than filling up the gas tank to go that far, but it did take a little longer.

WHAT IS ACTIVE LIVING BY DESIGN?
Join the Humboldt Partnership for Active Living (HumPAL) on Friday, December 1 to hear about land discuss how developers from the Chico and Petaluma areas are promoting ‘active living’ (walking, bicycling) through innovative project design. The event is tentatively scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Eureka Women’s Club, 1531 “J” Street. RSVP to ensure lunch is available (and if interested, sign up for HumPAL e-news) at 269-2054 or humpal@nrsrcaa.org.

ANNUAL BIKE CALENDAR
Included in this newsletter is a bike calendar you can use to track your mileage every day, every month, and every year.  It is a generic calendar that can be used year after year if you keep a blank.  But, in any case, we’ll give you a new one next year.   The only thing you have to do is get on that bike, keep track of your miles, and see if you can increase your mileage every year as you become less and less vehicle dependent. That is, if you have a vehicle at all! Happy cycling.
