A HAMMOND TRAIL CELEBRATION: BRIDGING THE GAP
The Redwood Community Action Agency and the County of Humboldt have invited the public to a grand opening celebration for the gap-closing segment of the Hammond Trail, linking Murray Road and Letz Avenue in McKinleyville. The celebration will be on November 10, 10:00 am-1:00 pm. at the northwest quadrant of Route 101 and Murray Road. The non-motorized trail was opened for use on October 27th. A separate interpretive footpath along Widow White Creek will be opened for the first time on November 10th.
With the completed 1⁄2 mile gap, one can now ride the trail from Murray Road north to Clam Beach. At the celebration, the many agencies and groups that made this happen will share their joy with the public. This culminates a nearly 30 year effort.
MANY IMPROVEMENTS FOR BICYCLISTS SLATED FOR HUMBOLDT COUNTY ROADS
Recently, the HBBCA had dialogue with Chris Whitworth, Humboldt County Roads Deputy Director. He gave updates on improvements slated for County Roads, including:
-
In conjunction with repaving McKinleyville Avenue bike lanes will be widened to five feet.
-
Sutter and Pickett Roads, currently under construction, will have bike lanes.
-
Widening to provide shoulders on Myrtle Avenue from Hall Avenue to Mitchell Heights; and on Old Arcata Road from Three Corners to Stephen’s Lane should be underway next summer.
-
Shoulders are to be added on Fieldbrook Road through the center of the valley next summer if permits can be secured.
The County is to be commended on the vast number of improvements to accommodate bicyclists considering the funding constraints they face every year.
FRIENDS OF ANNIE AND MARY RAIL-TRAIL SEEKING FUNDING
The Friends of the Annie and Mary Rail-trail is trying to raise another $5,000 to build the trail within the City limits of Blue Lake. So far, they have received a $6,700 grant and raised another $800 toward the funding needed to complete an approximate one mile long trail within the City. After that, they plan to pursue extension to the Glendale area. If you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation, contact Ingrid Kosek at 668-5066 or Phoebe Smith at 668-1696; or mail it to the group at P. O. Box 804, Blue Lake CA 95525.
ANNUAL BIKE CALENDAR
Included in this newsletter is a bike calendar you can use to track your mileage every day, every month, and every year. It is a generic calendar that can be used year after year if you keep a blank. But, in any case, we’ll give you a new one next year. The only thing you have to do is get on that bike, keep track of your miles, and see if you can increase your mileage every year as you become less and less vehicle dependent. That is, if you have a vehicle at all! Happy cycling.

The HBBCA checked with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine whom to contact if you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve safety or convenience for cyclists. This might include a pothole in the bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, or the need to clear vegetation encroaching on the shoulder.
Of course, if you see a condition that requires immediate emergency action,
