BIKE TO WORK DAY EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR MAY IN EUREKA AND ARCATA
(See below for details. Please plan to participate to indicate your support for cycling improvements in our region)

NEXT REGULAR MEETING MARCH 26TH IN ARCATA-DOBY CLASS TO BE IN ATTENDANCE
The next regular HBBCA meeting will be held at Luzmilla's Mexican Restaurant at 13th and G Streets in Arcata on Monday, March 26th. Those interested in joining us for dinner can order at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will begin at 6:30. The meeting is open to the public.

The agenda is set by those who attend. The agenda will include an update on bike-related plans for the City of Arcata by Director of Public Works, Doby Class. Bring your questions for Doby to the meeting.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. For more information, check the HBBCA website at www.humbike.org.

BIKE TO WORK MONTH IS MAY TWO BIKE TO WORK DAY RALLIES PLANNED BY THE HBBCA
May 11, noontime-A rally will be held at the Old Town Gazebo at 2nd and F Streets
in Eureka.

May 18, noontime-A rally will be held at the Arcata Plaza.

We're hoping to have even bigger and better events by having the rallies on back to back Fridays. We will be especially targeting the Arcata rally in an effort to get more participation. For all the cycling that occurs in Arcata, we have had disappointing turnouts at the rallies there.

If you are an HBBCA member who lives or works in the Arcata area, please plan to attend to show your support for improved conditions for bicycling in our region.

If you have a friend who cycles some, or should, try to get him or her to ride to work that week and to either one or both of the rallies. There will be snacks and free drawings for great bike gear donated by local bike shops, HBBCA members and the HBBCA. Don't miss it!!

For more information, contact Scott Kelly via email or phone (see Director list below)

HBBCA SELECTS COMPANY TO MAINTAIN ITS WEBSITE
Precision Intermedia in Fortuna has been chosen to maintain our website. It is a company with 10 employees and has been in business for about 10 years. We expect them to be able to provide more timely updates to our site. If you see anything in need of updating, please contact Rick Knapp (ph. 445-1097) who serves as the single focal point for updates.

CITY OF EUREKA IMPROVES INTERESECTION OF BUHNE AND H STREETS FOR BIKE SAFETY
Ever since the City added a left turn lane on Buhne at the intersection of H Street without widening Buhne Street, a serious safety problem has existed. For about 3 years, the HBBCA has been trying to get the City to correct the problem, which directed bicyclists riding easterly on the shoulder into a one foot drop off into a drainage collection basin. Recent discussions with Dan Moody, City Traffic Engineer, were fruitful. He had a drainage correction project added to another paving project. Now, cyclists who are 1-3 feet of the curb can proceed safely on the street. Thanks, Dan!

THE DANGERS OF CROSSING SKEWED RAILROAD TRACKS IN EUREKA MAY BE CORRECTED
As with the problem above, Dan Moody has indicated a willingness to pursue filling the channels along side skewed railroad tracks along the waterfront so that cyclists don't have to weave on the roadway to cross on a safe angle. Since the railroad will not be operational for many years in Eureka, we are seeking mitigation in the interim. Should the railroad become operational in the future, the small amount of asphalt concrete along the tracks can easily be removed. Let's hope it happens soon. This is especially important given the major improvements that are planned for the Balloon Track/Tract and the increased vehicle traffic that will accompany it.

HUMBOLDT BAY TRAIL BEING PURSUED
A planning team is being established to study and pursue development of a multi-purpose trail between Eureka and Arcata. As conceived, the study will involve local and state agencies, the railroad, and several interest groups. Details regarding the planned effort can be found on the Humboldt County Association of Governments' website: www.hcaog.net/docs/trail_study/

NARROWED VEHICLE LANES PROVEN TO CALM TRAFFIC
According to the January 2007 edition of “Quick Release,” an interim report from the National Transportation Research Board has concluded that narrowed automobile lane widths calm motor vehicle traffic while having no negative impact on collisions. This study adds support for efforts that have been implemented in the Humboldt Bay region in order to add bike lanes. Examples include: Myrtle Avenue, 6th, 7th, Harrison, and Henderson Streets in Eureka; and G and H Streets, and LK Wood Boulevard in Arcata.

AB 60 WOULD PROVIDE A SAFE PASSING DISTANCE FOR BICYCLISTS
Assembly Bill 60 which would have provided that motorists must provide at least 3 feet of clearance between their vehicle and a bicyclist when passing did not pass out of committee. Current law requires a vehicle to pass bicycles to the left at a “safe distance.” There was opposition expressed from the trucking industry. Several states now have a law similar to what would have been provided under AB 60.

WHO TO CALL WHEN YOU SEE A SAFETY CONCERN (Revised 10/06)
The HBBCA checked with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine whom to contact if you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve safety or convenience for cyclists. This might include a pothole in the bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, or the need to clear vegetation encroaching on the shoulder.

Of course, if you see a condition that requires immediate emergency action,
call 9-1-1. For other conditions, the following is provided:
