May is Bike Month Humboldt 2024
May is Bike Month Humboldt 2024. Once again the Bike Month Humboldt Coalition has planned several events. Details on events can be found on the bikemonthhumboldt.org website. We encourage you to sign up teams and yourselves for the Bike Month Challenge. Please show support for the bicycle as a fun mode of transportation by attending the Bicycle Celebration and Expo at the Jefferson Community Center Park at 1000 A Street in Eureka, Saturday, May 18th, 11a.m.-2 p.m. Lots of groups and agencies will be participating. Get free “fitted” helmets for your kids. Make your own free smoothies by pedal power. Listen to pedal-powered music from a local band. Win free prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. Lucky ones will get free rearview mirrors attached to their helmets. Either way, learn how to properly attach one to be effective.

The HBBCA donated $200 to the Coalition to support events.

Status of Buffered Bike Lanes on H and I Streets in Eureka
It is getting closer…...Later this spring/summer, we will finally be able to enjoy the new bike friendly configuration on H and I Street in Eureka. This will be the most dramatic improvement for bicyclists on City streets since the 1980s. The contractor is completing work on the curb extensions on H, I, 6th and 7th Streets. Next up will be the addition of the buffered bike lanes on H and I Streets and the elimination of one lane of traffic on those streets. This will not only create a new corridor for bike riding, but will slow down traffic on the streets and make it more like a residential street. It should be a welcome improvement for those living on those streets, too.

8th and 9th Street Bike Lanes Added in Arcata
In late March, the City of Arcata completed the two block long conversion of 8th and 9th Streets between I and K Streets to one lane one way streets with bike lanes on the right side.

In-Person Public Meeting Held to Solicit Comments on Eureka Bike Plan
On March 7th, Mark Thomas Associates and the City of Eureka held a public meeting at the Jefferson Community Center to present results to date and solicit community input on the Eureka Bike Plan. About 50-60 people attended. As part of the effort, about 18 corridors were identified where low impact/low cost construction could be undertaken to make improvements to better accommodate bike travel. Attendees were given 10 green stickers and one red sticker and were invited to stick them on the corridors they favored for improvement. The red one was to go on the one they felt especially strong that it needed radical improvement. Comments can still be sent to: bikeplan@eurekaca.gov.

Major Efforts in Arcata to Improve Circulation and Community Connections
Netra Khatri, City Engineer, briefed HBBCA at its last meeting and provided followup information on major projects under development.

A US 101 and Sunset Avenue Interchange Project will involve construction of two new roundabouts (LK Wood at Sunset; and G and H Streets at Sunset) and Class I shared use path connections, among other features. This project is complete through the environmental approval stage. It is now funded by the State for design. Construction funding will be sought in the future, which could cost $18-20million. [Note: Both the HBBCA and the Coalition for Responsible Transportation Priorities have requested that bicycle and pedestrian traffic be separated.]

In addition, the City’s “Reconnecting Arcata” Project was just selected as one of three projects under the Caltrans Reconnecting Communities Program for funding, the dollar amount is not known yet.  The Project seeks to address mobility and accessibility challenges caused by three state highways (US 101, SR 255, and SR 299) through comprehensive planning efforts via public partnership.

The City is working with Cal Poly Humboldt and Caltrans with these projects.

Who to Call When You See a Safety Concern (Rev. 1/3/24)
The HBBCA periodically checks with agencies in the Humboldt Bay region to determine appropriate contact personnel to respond to bike-related issues.  If you see a condition that needs to be corrected in order to improve safety or convenience for cyclists such as a pothole in a bike lane, accumulated debris on a roadway shoulder, the need to re-stripe a bike lane, the need to clear vegetation encroaching on a shoulder, or a street light that is out, call the responsible agency/person listed below.  Of course, if you see a condition that requires immediate attention, like a stop sign knocked down, call 9-1-1.  For non-emergency conditions, the following contact information is provided:

Caltrans - US and State highways (e.g. US-101, State Routes 36, 211, 255, 299, etc) If in doubt, start with Caltrans.
